Our ServicesPreparing Your Horse for the Hunter Jumper Show Ring

Getting a horse ready for a hunter jumper competition involves much more than practicing jumps. Successful show preparation begins at home with a combination of flatwork, conditioning, grooming, routine, and confidence-building exercises.

One of the most important parts of preparation is making sure the horse understands the fundamentals. Rhythm, balance, transitions, steering, and responsiveness should be established before increasing the difficulty of the exercises.

Schooling should also include situations that may be encountered at a horse show. Different jumps, new environments, distractions, and changes in footing can all be introduced gradually so the horse becomes more comfortable handling new experiences.

The rider’s preparation is equally important. Riders should practice maintaining a consistent position, following their horse’s rhythm, and staying calm when something does not go exactly as planned.

A proper pre-show routine can also make a difference. Grooming, tack preparation, feeding schedules, warm-up routines, and adequate rest should all be considered when preparing for competition.

At Lesley Cox Equestrian, the goal is not simply to attend horse shows but to use competition as a way to measure progress and continue developing the horse-and-rider partnership.

With thoughtful preparation and consistent training, both horse and rider can enter the show ring feeling confident, prepared, and ready to perform.
